Joe is a raw and naive young man who travels from Texas to New York, dreaming of a comfortable life. In order to survive in the big city, she becomes a gigolo, but she doesn't get along the best: his first customer was offended when Joe asked her for money, so in the end he had to pay her to calm her down. The Texan meets a petty fraudster who suffers from tuberculosis and lends him money that will soon fail him to pay for a hotel, so they throw him out on the street.

John Schlesinger (1926-2003) is an English film and theater director and actor. He made his directorial debut with a documentary about London's Hyde Park, Sunday in the Park, and his first feature film was A Kind of Loving (1962). The most famous films he directed were Billy Liar (1963), Far from the Madding Crowd (1967, based on the novel by Thomas Hardy), Midnight Cowboy (1969, Oscar for Directing and Best Film), Sunday, Bloody Sunday (1971), The Day of the Locust (1975) and Marathon Man (1976).
