German composer Gustav von Aschenbach comes to Venice to rest from artistic and personal neuroses. In the luxury hotel where he is staying, he meets an attractive teenager, Tadzi, who is relaxing with his family. Aschenbach is increasingly preoccupied with Tadzi as the embodiment of classical proportions that he never managed to achieve in his art. The city soon contracted cholera.
